UK practice modules

We offer these modules in each of the specialist applications subjects to test your knowledge of UK business practice, legislation, regulation and professional guidance notes. We test each module by an online exam, in two parts: one common to all modules covering FSA regulation, and the other specific to the relevant specialist subject.

You don't need to pass to qualify as a Fellow but you do need to pass to practise in the UK in a reserved role, such as an actuarial function holder, with-profits actuary, reviewing actuary, peer reviewer, scheme actuary or Lloyd's Syndicate actuary. If you move into a different practice area you will need to take the relevant practice module for that area if you require a Practising Certificate.

We strongly recommend that every UK-based student taking a specialist application paper takes the relevant UK practice module at the same time. We also recommend that new qualifiers who have not passed, or been exempted from, a UK practice module, while doing the examinations for fellowship, sit the relevant practice module within 18 months of qualifying. The core reading for the specialist applications paper will be appropriate for the subject specific part of each module. There is additional core reading to cover the generic part of each module.

You can find application forms and other related information in the boxes at the right of this page.

Exam arrangements

We test each module with a 90 minute multiple choice online exam, taken under exam conditions and supervised by a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. You can enter at any time of year. You can make any number of attempts at each subject but you must leave four weeks between separate attempts. You can answer the questions in any order, and return to an answer and change it. When you apply you will need to provide details of your intended supervisor. Details are available in the supervisors' document on the right.

Confirmation of entry

An e-mail confirming receipt will be sent to each candidate within five working days of their application being received. Applications will be processed within four weeks of receipt.

When you apply for the exam, we issue you with an access code which is valid for 90 days and one exam sitting. If you don't sit the exam within this time you'll have to submit a new application and new payment. We do not issue individual reminders, and we do not provide refunds for UKPM entry payments.

Syllabus

The questions you receive for your exam will be based on the syllabus for the year in which your exam entry is processed. Therefore, if your entry is processed in December 2010, but you do not sit the exam until January 2011, you will receive the 2010 question paper. Your access code is valid for 90 days and if the exam is not taken within this time, you will need to submit an new application and this may affect the date of the exam syllabus used for your questions.

Results

Once you have submitted your answers you will be notified immediately on screen as to whether you have passed or failed this attempt.

Pass lists will be published on the website on the first working day of each month for the month's period up to the 20th day of the previous month.
