Over 50 of the Highland’s brightest maths students will be coming together over the 18th – 20th November for the 16th annual Highlands Mathematics Weekend.  The weekend focusses on STEM subjects (mathematics, science and technology) and career opportunities in business and industry.  The event is incredibly popular with high school students studying advanced mathematics from all of Highland’s 29 secondary schools.

The event is sponsored by the Scottish Board of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and organised by the Highland Council, and gives the students a chance to get a taster of a variety of career options through a series of indoor and outdoor activities at Lagganlia Outdoor Centre, Kingussie.

Gavin Reid, from the Scottish Board of the IFoA, comments,

“The Scottish Board of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries is delighted to sponsor such an important event that focusses on careers opportunities in STEM subjects.  Highland secondary school students attending the weekend workshops will gain exposure to a wide variety of career choices in which they could bring their mathematical skills to real use in business and industry.

“The IFoA will be holding three interactive workshops for students to give them the chance to see what actuaries do and the variety of roles where actuarial science can be applied.  This will be the third year that I’ve attended the Highlands Mathematics Weekend and it is always a real pleasure to work with such talented students and highlight career options where they might put their skills to use.”
