The Climate Change Reserving Working Party is looking into how best to support reserving actuaries in responding to climate change. This is expected to be a wide-ranging and multiyear endeavour so the Working Party is seeking to engage with the community of GI reserving actuaries who will be having to think about climate change and how it will impact on their work.

This survey will be used to create a baseline from which the Working Party will develop its approach and (hopefully) measure progress! Although reserving actuaries are the principal target for this survey, consultants and those with an awareness of the issues are welcome to participate.

The aim of the Climate Change Reserving Working Party is to move beyond the assessment of the impact of climate change by risk, capital, and pricing actuaries, to focus on reserving-specific issues. Our thoughts on what’s needed are still evolving. Your participation in this survey can therefore play a critical role in helping us understand the challenges and how best to support reserving actuaries. The survey asks some questions about you, the organisation you work for, and how climate change is being viewed and addressed, with a particular focus on reserving.

The Climate Change Reserving Working Party has connections to the Institute of Risk Management’s Climate Change Special Interest Group, this group came together with a desire to identify and share best practices, to specifically help risk professionals navigate the complexities of climate change impacts on their organisation. This practitioners’ guide is a first step in compiling a set of practices that risk professionals can use to identify, assess, manage, monitor and communicate the effects of climate change on their organisation.
