Brighton played host to the 2018 PHC Conference, held in May, attracting 150 delegates and presenters. The attendees enjoyed two days of insightful and challenging presentations mixed with the opportunity to network with other actuaries working in the protection industries. This included a number of actuaries working outside the UK.

Sir Steve Webb, the former pensions minister, and Matt Singleton opened the conference highlighting the challenges and opportunities around meeting the needs of the growing 65+ population, including the role legislation can play.

Day two was packed with a mix of plenary sessions and concurrent workshops concluding with the conference dinner and excellent entertainment courtesy of “TV Mathematician” Hannah Fry. We were also very fortunate to be joined by our President Marjorie Ngwenya and a number of Council members. Richard Galbraith and Dr Doug Wright opened day three with their presentation taking a look into what the future may hold on the health front and the implications for our industry.

Throughout every plenary and workshop the conference was notable for the number of questions and comments from the audience and the ensuing quality of debate. This no doubt contributed to the positive feedback from delegates.

Many thanks to the Health and Care Lifelong Learning Sub-committee for organising yet another successful conference and we hope to see as many of you as possible at the 2019 conference.
