Last year we announced that the GI Practice Area was undergoing a restructure and two new subcommittees were forming to replace the General Insurance Organising Committee (GIRO) and GI Education and Continuing Professional Development (GI ECPD) Committee.

The GI Lifelong Learning Committee (GILL)* was formed to have responsibility for all matters relating to CPD for the GI Practice Area and the development of the IFoA’s annual offering of GI conferences and seminars, including the flagship GIRO conference. Objectives for the current session are to ensure CPD is of high quality and covers a range of topics for various levels of understanding (beginner, intermediate and high) and is provided in practical locations; and considering new and innovative ways of CPD not reliant on physical location.

The GI Research and Thought Leadership Committee (GIRTL) is responsible for all matters relating to research and thought leadership, including working party funding applications, specifically within the GI Practice Area. The committee’s main objectives are to ensure relevance and research for the GI community and consider new and emerging research over a continuous time horizon. The work of the committee is split into four workstreams: identifying questions for research, supporting ongoing research, promoting outputs of research to GI actuaries and other professionals, and developing the IFoA research environment.

Both committees are now up and running and holding regular meetings – we look forward to seeing how their work develops over the coming year.

*Spaces are still available on the GI Lifelong Learning Committee. We are particularly keen to hear from members or non-members with extensive experience in the GI Practice Area and strong networks. Visit our Volunteer Vacancies page for more details.
