We recognise and celebrate the commitment and achievement of individuals who have supported and advanced the profession.

Honorary Fellowship

Honorary Fellowship is awarded to those who have achieved distinction in related fields or given significant service to the actuarial profession and who are able to add value to the profession and can have an active and ongoing involvement with the IFoA.

The award of Honorary Fellowship has a long and prestigious history with recipients including; Charles Babbage, inventor of the “difference engine”, and noted actuary. More recent recipients of Honorary Fellowship of the IFoA include;

Baron Turner of Ecchinswell,  former leader of the Pensions Commission and Chairman of the Financial service Agency (FSA) and is now Chair of the Institute for New Economic Thinking; Professor Xiaolin Li, founder of the China Institute for Actuarial Science at CUFE, and Professor Zhigang Xie, who has played a key role in promoting the actuarial profession in China and supporting the education of actuaries of the future.

The Gold Medal

The Gold Medal is the highest honour awarded by the IFoA and represents the pinnacle of actuarial achievement. Past recipients have contributed greatly to the field of actuarial science, leaving lasting legacies across the global community.

Previous Gold Medal recipients include influential figures in actuarial science; Frank Redington, most widely known for his development of immunisation theory and the development of the with-profits contract for pension and terminal bonuses for life assurance policies and David Wilkie, who made significant contributions in the field of investment modelling, the construction of mortality tables and the modelling of AIDS and genetics.

The Finlaison medal

The Finlaison Medal is awarded in recognition of service to the actuarial profession in fulfilling the responsibilities laid out in our Royal Charter, beyond that which would normally be expected of an ordinary member.

Previous Silver and Finlaison Medal recipients include; Bob Kirton, who, with Trevor Haynes, devised the basis on which the PAYE tax system operates and Council member with interests in actuarial education, hospital administration and national pensions and Howard Webb, long serving Council member and committee Chair, making a significant contribution to the development of professional conduct standards.
