“R and E is the IFoA’s newest practice area, so research and thought leadership is particularly important” explains Research Sub-committee Chair Oliver Bettis and Deputy Chair Claire Jones. “It enables us to develop the evidence and tools that actuaries need to incorporate R and E considerations in their work, and also to expand actuarial expertise in R and E so we can contribute to public debate in this area.”

In recognition of research’s central importance, the Research Sub-committee was the first committee established by the R and E Board. We play a vital role in guiding and overseeing the profession’s research and thought leadership on R and E issues. We initiate and support working parties in the R and E area, as well as providing R and E input to working parties led by other practice areas where appropriate. We facilitate knowledge-sharing between actuaries and external researchers. And we oversee the dissemination of relevant research, seeking to make it more accessible and increase its uptake by actuaries.

The Research Sub-committee is seeking enthusiastic new members who want to shape and foster actuarial research on R and E topics. This is a great opportunity to develop your expertise and contacts in this field, and put yourself at the forefront of new thinking in the profession. We are particularly keen to heard from actuaries with a background in General Insurance, Life, Risk Management or Health and Care.

The R and E Research Sub-committee volunteer vacancy closes on 24 October. If you would like to discuss any aspect of this role before applying, please contact Practices Manager, Sharon Cumberbatch, who can put you in touch with Oliver or Claire.
