I became a Fellow of the IFoA in 2011. Before that, I spent 10 years studying for the IFoA and CAA actuarial exams, and gaining industry experience. Studying to become an actuary gave me an insight into the commitment necessary to succeed in this career and the challenges that students face along the way.

I volunteered as a mentor three years ago, when the IFoA set up its China office. It was important for me to share my experience with others interested in becoming an actuary, to help encourage them.   I also wanted to help more people understand the value of actuarial science, not only for the insurance industry, but also for other fields in today’s business world.

Last year, while the IFoA education actuaries were teaching in Beijing, we held revision sessions in three cities (Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen) to help local students. It gives me great pleasure to see students passing their exams, gaining knowledge and making progress towards their career goals.

I am currently in charge of the Actuarial Department at Sunshine Insurance Group. Sunshine Insurance is an innovative, fast growing company. We believe hiring the right people is the key to our success and our vision for talent recruitment aligns well with the IFoA’s corporate values of Community, Integrity and Progress.

In September 2016, the IFoA and Sunshine Insurance Group entered into an agreement in which Sunshine Insurance Group sponsors the top IFoA students at two key universities in China: the Central University of Finance and Economics and the University of International Business and Economics. As well as financial support, the sponsorship programme also offers internships and practical learning opportunities. This is a great start and we look forward to working further with the IFoA to develop actuarial talent in the region and raise the profile of the IFoA in China.

It is great to see the IFoA has members in over 160 countries. In order to increase its influence internationally, the IFoA requires help from its international members. So why not join us and volunteer for the IFoA?
