The size of the state pension

The Basic State Pension is Ł67.50 per week - 18% of median earnings. It has fallen in relation to earnings over the last 20 years as a result of the price linking formula - it would otherwise have reached Ł99 per week. Increases in the 2000 pre-Budget statement do not fundamentally alter this.

Pensions, funding and risk

In this paper, we identify the economic system in which occupational pension schemes operate. This system includes all parties to the pension arrangement, particularly the members of the scheme and the shareholders of the sponsoring company. This requires us to model the pension scheme not as a self-contained fund, but simultaneously alongside the company, and to recognise its interaction with other parties with financial interests in the scheme.
