In recent years the HW SAS conference has become an increasingly prominent event on the calendars of both students and professionals alike. Each year we invite a number of experienced guest speakers to discuss topical issues faced by the profession. Attendance will be recorded allowing IFoA members attending our conference to obtain CPD hours.

The theme this year is "Explore the Prism of Challenges for the Modern Actuary". With scheduled topics covering:

“Digital forensic on Cyber Security” – presented by Vassilis

Manoussos, Digital Forensics Consultant and owner of Strathclyde Forensics

With the increase of digitalization and global integration, cyber risk has been a major threat to the insurance business. Thus, corporations are developing cyber security to tackle risk. Vassilis Manoussos will highlight the use of digital forensics to evaluate previous breaches or cyber attacks in view of future risk assessment.

“Insurance on Earthquake Catastrophe Risk” – presented by Dr. Gordon Woo, Catastrophist with Risk Management Solutions

Earthquake risk has always been a major social and economic threat to the insurance and re-insurance industry. Dr. Gordon Woo will introduce quantitative earthquake risk modelling and elaborate on the evolution of earthquake insurance analysis, engaging one of the largest historical earthquake events – Tohoku Earthquake Japan.

“The rise of InsurTech” – presented by Barry Smart, Chief Technology Officer and Partner of Hymans Robertson

Insurers are beginning to recognise the importance of most Fintech and InsurTech-related trends, and as a result, they are working to bridge the gap using data analytics and economic modeling to deliver benefits at each stage of customer life cycle. Barry Smart will discuss the use of InsurTech in improving insurance while innovating for commercial gains.
