Girls – Count Us In

Even when girls perform just as well as boys on maths exams, they are half as likely to pursue in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) related career.

There is a massive gender imbalance that persists in STEM-related fields. Women make up 23% of the core STEM occupations in the UK and 24% of those working in core STEM industries. While a record number of girls express an interest, too few are considering a STEM field for a career. In order to create a gender balance in the STEM workforce and foster innovative thinking, we need to power our future and actively encourage girls to pursue their interests and abilities in STEM.

Girls need to know that working in a STEM field means more than sitting in a windowless lab with beakers and microscopes. They need to discover first-hand the range of opportunities that are available to them through other females who have challenged the stereotype and pursued a successful career in STEM.

We are hosting our first ‘Girls – Count Us In’ event in a series of events to promote diversity in the profession, appealing to girls who are interested in pursuing a career in STEM and therefore potentially a career as an actuary.
