On 17 September , I chaired a Sessional meeting for the Health and Care practice area.  This is the fourth year we have run the “Hot topics in Health and Care” event covering three varied topics, where the author writes a short paper made available before the event and presents their findings in the evening.

The first paper, “Digital Technology and Disability Claims”, was presented by Adele Groyer and Ross Campbell from Gen Re, which discussed how technology can be used to cover claims management. This is a key area of interest in Health and Care, particularly around the management of Income Protection claims.

Professor Gordon Woo discussed recent research of the 1918 influenza, “Age-dependence of 1918 pandemic mortality”, 100 years after this catastrophic pandemic.  This is a new and interesting area which has wide implications on the vulnerability of different age groups to different strains of flu.

The final paper, presented by Tim Eppert (author Sabrina Link) from Gen Re and titled “Long Term Care Reform in Germany – At long last”, discusses reform in the German Long Term Care system. Important lessons can be learned from different social care systems around the world which can be used to inform how the UK system could be reformed.

The event was well attended with about 100 attendees and if you are interested in catching up on these topics the video will be available online. A lively discussion was generated by the presentations/papers with good feedback from attendees on the range of topics covered.
