Banking Specialist Principle and Advanced (SP10 and SA10) FAQ

Banking Specialist Principles and Advanced (SP10 and SA10) are key assessments for students who are planning to work in the field of banking.

ASSA have produced a student guide for the B100 and B200 subjects. This document describes how non-ASSA members can register for B100 and B200, and it provides details about the tuition materials available, the exams, and ASSA support contact details.

To register for ASSA’s B100 and B200 subjects you will need to register as a non-member on the ASSA website. Details are provided in the student guide.

Once you are registered as a non-member you will be able to buy tuition materials from the ASSA web shop and register on to the B100 Banking Principles course or the B200 Banking Applications course as appropriate.

While there are no requirements that you need to meet to register on ASSA’s online International Banking modules, we recommend that you complete the IFoA’s Core Principles and Core Practice exams before you register for ASSA’s online International Banking modules.

ASSA B100 Banking Principles and B200 Banking Applications exams, like IFoA pre-Fellowship exams, assume a level of knowledge that you will have gained by sitting the IFoA’s Core Principles and Core Practice exams.

You can now buy study materials (notes) from the ASSA webshop. To buy the note packs for ASSA’s online International Banking modules (ASSA course code B100 and B200) you will need to register as a Non-member on the ASSA website. Once you have created your Non-member account, visit the ASSA home page and log in to the ASSA website.  Once you are logged in to your Non-member account click on Shop to visit the ASSA webshop. You can select your B Series notes, add them to your cart and check out.

We recommend buying the electronic B Series E-book. There is an option to buy hard copy notes however, you will need to pay for these notes to be couriered to you.

We recommend you buy the relevant study materials before attempting to sit either the B100 Banking Principles or B200 Banking Applications exams.

There are a range of support options available to buy for ASSA B100 Banking Principles and B200 Banking Applications.

If you register for the ASSA B100 Banking Principles or B200 Banking Applications course, you can buy a full tuition package, which includes: 30 hours online contact time, marked assignments of 100 marks (compulsory) and a mock examination, marked with feedback. Mock exams will take place around two weeks before the B100 and B200 final exams.

Course leaders will provide guidance on resources that should be consulted and may provide a schedule for knowledge preparation before the scheduled seminar/lecture. ASSA will communicate schedules and preparation work to all registered students.

Mock exams

If you do not wish to buy a full tuition package, you can buy a mock exams package.

The mock exams package includes; mock examination, marked with feedback, and marked assignments of 100 marks (optional).

Mock exams will take place around two weeks before the B100 and B200 final exams.

Post examination support

There is also a range of post-examination support options available to buy for ASSA B100 Banking Principles and B200 Banking Applications.

Examiner workshops

You can book a place on an examiner workshop, which includes a group session with an examiner, after your exam.

You also can book an exam counselling session, which includes an individual session with an examiner after Exam (Fail A and Fail B only).

ASSA follows a scaffolding approach to their education programme. This means that students who are members of ASSA are required to comply to set requirements, for example, submitting all assignments or passing a subject before they can access the following subject or exam. 

As a member of the IFoA registered as a Non-member with ASSA, these requirements will not apply to you.

There will be two exam sessions (semesters) for ASSA’s online International Banking modules (course code B100 and B200) in 2024.

First semester

ASSA B100 Banking Principles

You can sit the ASSA B100 (SP10) exam on 27 May 2024.

ASSA B200 Banking Applications

You can sit the ASSA B200 (SA10) exam on 17 May 2024.

Second semester

ASSA B100 Banking Principles

You can sit the ASSA B100 (SP10) exam on 30 November 2024.

ASSA B200 Banking Applications

You can sit the ASSA B200 (SA10) exam on 16 October 2024.

You can register for ASSA B100 or B200 exams until 22 February 2024 (first semester) and between 12 June and 28 July (second semester).

The ASSA B100 Banking Principles and B200 Banking Applications exams will both be online invigilated exams. Your exam answers will need to all be typed.

  • B100 Banking: Friday 12 July
  • B200 Banking: Friday 19 July

Second semester

Both B100 and B200 exam results will be published on Friday 13 December

Yes. If you were unsuccessful at a previous exam attempt you will be able to join ASSA’s examiner workshops for the previous semester’s exam paper. You will be given temporary access to an unmarked copy of your exam script for the session. 

You will also be able to access Exam counselling, a one-on-one session you will have with an assigned exam counsellor who is a subject matter expert. The session will touch on your previous exam attempt and focus on areas of improvement to ensure that you excel at your next exam attempt.

While there are no requirements that you need to meet to register on ASSA’s online International Banking modules, we recommend that you complete the IFoA’s Core Principles and Core Practice exams before you register for ASSA’s online International Banking modules.

If you have less than a year’s experience in banking or consulting, you should consider registering for the ASSA B100 Banking Principles course first.

ASSA B200 Banking Applications course focuses on the application of the principles you will have studied in the ASSA B100 Banking Principles course.

If you are unsure about whether ASSA’s online International Banking modules would be suitable for you at this stage in your career, we recommend joining our Banking Community to access to banking-specific events and content and access support like-minded actuaries in this sector.

If you have gained practical experience and knowledge by working in banking for several years you could sit the ASSA B200 Banking Applications exam. However, while you can register for the ASSA B200 Banking Applications or sit the B200 Banking Applications exam we recommend completing the ASSA B100 Banking Principles course first to improve your chances of passing ASSA B200 Banking Applications.

If you are an Associate who has opted out of PPD, but would now like to qualify as an IFoA Fellow by successfully completing ASSA’s new Banking modules, you will need to opt back into PPD. To qualify as a Fellow completing ASSA’s new Banking modules, you will need to meet our PPD requirements for qualification as a Fellow. You will need to complete and record the required months of PPD recording, with a minimum of 20 credits minimum logged in your PPD account in total (by the time you wish to qualify).

You will need to complete the annual minimum recording of 3 credits and 2 formal learning hours for each PPD year once you opt back into PPD in order to be eligible to qualify as a Fellow.
