On behalf of the CAA Global, the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) is seeking the support of qualified members who are willing to become Question Writers for the Certified Actuarial Analyst (CAA) Modules.The vacancy exists for the following modules:
 
Module 2, Module 3 and Module 4
 
The exams for these modules will be developed in conjunction with Pearson VUE, a leading provider of Computer-Based Assessments world-wide. The exams will consist of multiple choice items for which a bank of items will be built. 
 
The questions writers must ensure that the items maintain the standards of the CAA Global whilst ensuring they reflect the level and standards of the module concerned.

We are seeking to recruit three qualified IFoA members to join this new Working Party.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) Regulation Board has established a Working Party to investigate the potential implications of expected legislation in the UK on Collective Defined Contribution Pension Schemes (CDC Schemes) on the IFoA’s regulatory framework.

Time Commitment

We expect there to be around six meetings of the Working Party during the course of the project. It may also be necessary to have ad hoc additional meetings to discuss particular issues. Where possible all meetings will be conducted by way of video conference and particular issues dealt through email exchange. There may also be events or meetings to promote the project or to seek input with which members of the Working Party may be involved.

This presents an opportunity for Members to be involved in shaping the professional ethical requirements that apply to Members working in this new type of pension scheme and to ensure that they are appropriate and fit for purpose.

The current editor will step down at the end of 2019, and we are now seeking to hear from a highly motivated, enthusiastic member of the IFoA to join the experienced editorial team of the magazine from January 2020 for a duration of two years.

  • Do you have the creativity, yet eye for detail, to work on a quality publication?

The role requires a candidate with excellent communication skills, an ability to work under pressure, and the strategic vision to develop the magazine at a time when the role of the actuary is evolving.

Do you have a passion for advancing the profession within Africa and the time to contribute?

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) Regulation Board, in conjunction with the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA), are jointly establishing this working party to explore the value in developing further standards or guidance to support the profession in developing markets in Africa.

This working party will be established with the initial remit to help define the scope and the terms of reference for the group.  

Participation in the meetings will be via telephone or video conference call at a mutually convenient time for all involved.  

Time commitment

We are initially seeking support from members who would like to be involved in establishing the scope and terms of reference for this group.  This is likely to amount to participation in a maximum of three meetings: each lasting approximately one hour.  It is hoped that the first meeting will be held in late June or early July.  Participation in these meetings will be by telephone or video conference call and will take place at a time mutually convenient to all members of the group. 

Thereafter, once the terms of reference and scope have been agreed, we will invite volunteers to continue to be part of the working party to deliver on the agreed outputs.  The time commitment going forward is likely to amount to approximately five hours per month, made up of participation in the conference call meetings and follow up research/actions in between; again, participation will be by telephone or video conference call and at a time mutually convenient to all members of the group. 

Person specification

We would like to encourage all members of the IFoA and ASSA to volunteer, including Fellows, Associates, Hon Fellows, Students and Affiliate members, from a wide range of practice areas.  The key skill we are seeking is experience working in relevant markets across Africa.  We would also encourage non-members with the relevant experience to apply.

The Practising Certificates Committee (PCC) is seeking to appoint a member to join the Pensions Panel to consider applications for Scheme Actuary Practising Certificates.

Expertise required

The current Chair of the PCC, John Jenkins, is seeking to hear from members who are Fellows of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) (qualified for at least three years) and who have knowledge and up to date experience in Scheme Actuary work coupled with broader experience of pensions work to contrast Scheme Actuary work against.  Ideally this person will also be a current, or recent, holder of a Scheme Actuary Practising Certificate.

Time commitment

Approximately, on average, ten hours per month, maybe more in December and January.  The PCC approve applications by email, and only if a case needs discussed will they meet by conference call.  There are two review meetings each year which are held in London.  Attendance at these meetings can be by conference call, if preferred.

Tenure

It is hoped that members of this committee will be happy to take up a tenure of at least three years.  Tenure is reviewable on a regular basis depending on changing circumstances, participation and performance in PCC matters.

As well as tasks which the board members are asked to undertake, the Deputy Leader will also specifically be asked to take on the tasks detailed in the Deputy Leader Task and Person Specification below. The Life Board is seeking to appoint a Deputy Chair.

This volunteer will ideally be a qualified member of the IFoA who is keen to build on the excellent foundations already created.  They should also have a desire to help shape and drive forward the Life practice area for the future.  

Life is currently the largest IFoA practice area, and supports the largest proportion of research working parties and Sub-committees.  For the Deputy Chair role in particular, prior involvement with other Life practice groups, such as sub-committees or working parties, would be advantageous.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) Finance and Investment Board is seeking to appoint up to four new members to broaden the collective experience of the board in relation to the range of backgrounds and areas of professional interest.  

The Finance and Investment Board is committed to promoting diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all board members.  We encourage applications from a diverse range of potential candidates, in terms of, but not exclusively gender, age, disability and ethnicity, as well as reflecting the geographical spread of our membership.  Applications are particularly welcome from female members and from members based outside the UK, who are currently under-represented.

In addition, we encourage candidates directly involved in investments for pension funds or insurance companies and are also keen that members from the banking industry (investment and retail) banking, and Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) to express interest in this role.  Actuaries of all ages are encouraged to volunteer including mature and newly qualified actuaries.  It is relevant experience and an ability to contribute that is required.

The board acts as a source of expertise within the profession on matters relating to the Finance and Investment practice area, and has a key role in promoting, supporting and championing the interests of practice area members.

This group works with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) Executive staff to consider consultations from Government, regulatory bodies, and other public interest bodies, and drafts responses as appropriate, in accordance with the IFoA’s consultations process.  The aim is to work collaboratively with other boards/consultation sub-committees as appropriate to produce comprehensive consultation responses that represent the wider IFoA views.  The sub-committee also works with external stakeholders to promote the public interest by providing their expertise and highlighting the value that actuaries can bring to society.

We are seeking support from two to three experienced Fellows and Associates of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) to volunteer to become part of the Professional Support Service (PSS) in order to strengthen our volunteer panels and to enable us to provide members with the benefit of their expertise in the interpretation of:

  • The Actuaries’ Code
  • Actuarial Profession Standards
  • Guidance Notes
  • Technical Actuarial Standards issued by the FRC.

Members may also request assistance relating to ethical dilemmas.

There is a particular need for practitioners specialising in Life, with an interest in professional ethics.  Please note this role can be delivered from anywhere around the globe, location is not a barrier.

How the PSS works

Members of the IFoA contact the PSS via an online form on the website to submit their queries and to ask for assistance on the interpretation of these professional and technical standards, or professional issues.  Queries are first considered and anonymised by members of the IFoA’s Executive staff before being circulated by email to the relevant topic specific panels of PSS experts.  

The PSS panel members share their views on the query and communicate with other panel members, predominantly via email, to discuss the key components of a suitable response before a final response is drafted by the IFoA’s Executive staff.  The draft response is then shared and considered by the panel members before a final response is agreed and sent to the enquiring member.  The PSS panel operate to a service level agreement whereby they aim to provide a full response within 15 working days.  For a more general overview of the operation of the PSS, you may wish to view the PSS User Guide.

Time commitment

The time commitment is not onerous.  The service receives on average 24 queries per year across a spread of disciplines with around half of the queries going to the professionalism panel.

We are looking for volunteers to fill a variety of roles to help deliver the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) 3-Stage Professional Skills Training regime:

Stage 1: Online Professionalism Awareness Test (OPAT)
Stage 2: Professional Skills Course (PSC)
Stage 3: Professional Skills for Experienced Members (PST)

We operate a 'Professional Skills Pool' which enables volunteers to declare an interest in specific roles suited to their particular skills, whilst opting out of other tasks perhaps less so.  These roles are:

1.  members to join a review group looking at the re-design of the OPAT and PSC;
the existing review group has vacancies for members with a Life or wider fields background to help design revised modules for Stages 1 and 2 of the IFoA’s Professional Skills Training.  Draft outline courses and formats have been proposed and the group is now in content development mode

2.  reviewing content for the re-designed OPAT and PSC (when finalised);
it is proposed to set up a review sub-group to evaluate the proposed content for the re-designed modules for Stages 1 and 2 of the IFoA’s Professional Skills Training

3.  facilitating Professional Skills sessions at IFoA events and conferences;
volunteers are sought to present at Professional Skills Sessions designed to meet the Stage 3 PST requirements at scheduled IFoA events and conferences

4.  facilitating ad hoc Professional Skills sessions at other locations including overseas;
there is also a requirement for volunteers to deliver Professional Skills sessions on request.  This can be to Regional Actuarial Associations or overseas associations on an ad hoc basis.

Applications are invited from all practice areas.  We would like to hear from enthusiastic members of the IFoA who have a keen interest in professional ethics and wish to offer the benefit of their experience dealing with professional issues to other members.

Student volunteers are one of our most valuable assets.  We are currently seeking enthusiastic and committed students from our global community who are ready to get involved to help shape the exam experience for future students.  As regional representatives, you will work with us and other forum members on future decisions or considerations in regards to exam process, structures, administration and other key aspects of the student experience.

Being a regional representative for us is one of the most impactful ways to contribute to your profession and make positive change.  We have six global forums to ensure that you can have your say, no matter where you are located.

The areas where we are currently seeking regional representatives to help us are:

  • The Americas
  • Europe (excluding the UK, Channel Islands and Ireland)*

In order to be an area representative you MUST:

We are seeking to hear from qualified IFoA members willing to take part in this service.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) is delighted to announce an 'IFoA Buddy System'.  The introduction of this new service will be facilitated by the IFoA and it aims to provide IFoA members with access to experienced (qualified) IFoA members who are willing to share their thoughts and experiences, and have a conversation, with other members, around the globe.  

We are looking for qualified actuaries who would be willing to volunteer to take part and who would like to volunteer to share some of their experience to help other members of the profession.  Our new buddy system will offer the opportunity for members to get in touch with other members if they are looking for an independent person to talk to about career choices, professional, or other issues. 

Please note: Initially we were trialling this in the general insurance, finance and investment, and risk areas.  As this trial was successful we are expanding this to all practice areas.

The service is entirely free and is based on members volunteering to provide this support.

"Organisations that employ at least three qualified actuaries are encouraged to appoint a CPD Co-ordinator".  This is an Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) recommendation.

CPD Co-ordinators play a key role in effective engagement between organisations who employ our members and the IFoA. Organisations with multiple offices often appoint one per office.  Some of the large organisations appoint one CPD Co-ordinator per practice area, eg a different person for Life and General Insurance in the same organisation.

IFoA members who are appointed by the IFoA to represent the IFoA in this way, do so via a range of activities which include focusing on:

  • education issues
  • professionalism
  • assisting new associations
  • technical committee work – such as looking at aspects of relevance to specific practice areas in General Insurance; Life Insurance; Pensions; Health and Care; Finance and Investment; Risk Management and Resource and Environment.
  • assisting with the administration of the IAA

These may take the form of a short term task force or working group; attendance at a specific conference; or committee membership on behalf of the IFoA.

Getting involved

If you are a qualified member of the IFoA with an international remit, or international experience, please consider expressing an interest in getting involved in future opportunities.

We are ideally seeking members with existing experience of volunteering for the IFoA, though this is desirable rather than essential.  

Occasionally a student member of the IFoA, who has extensive experience in a particular area, may also be able to offer support to one of the task forces.

How the pool works

Once appointed to the pool, your details, and information about your area of expertise and interest, will be retained by the IFoA.  When a new opportunity arises, or when a current volunteer stands down from their post, we will advertise the details to those who have indicated a relevant interest, or who have suitable experience.  At that time a detailed Task and Person Specification will explain what is involved.  Sometimes these vacancies need to be filled fairly quickly and often require specialist technical input.  In light of this requirement, and to encourage the chance for succession planning, we are keen to build up a pool of suitably qualified members who are willing to offer this ad hoc support, subject to their availability of the time.

The Risk Management in a Digital World working party are looking to recruit additional members to help form views and recommendations to assist actuarial practitioners in making risk management considerations relating to operating in a digital world.

Having developed guidance for actuaries and risk practitioners who are involved in various stages of ensuring the success of InsurTech opportunities, the working party is now seeking additional members in order to help with subsequent phases of work. 

The focus of upcoming phases of work includes:

  • Development of Digital Risk Appetite
  • Blockchain in Insurance – Use Cases; and
  • Education and Training in the context of InsurTech

For the above areas, the working party output will aim to provide practical guidance to actuaries and risk practitioners, to help ensure that their business decisions are cognisant of the risk management issues.

Subsequent phases could focus on broadening the scope to include, RegTech and FinTech, market, economic and social impacts.

Experience/skills/background desirable

All backgrounds and areas of relevant expertise welcome.

Time commitment

Phase two of the working party’s intended research has commenced and so the volunteers will be expected to ‘hit the ground running’ with the main concentration of work happening between now and the end of the year.  Participation can be via conference call therefore ensuring this opportunity is available to all members. 

If you live or work near to one of the IFoA offices, you are welcome to make use of our facilities for the call.  Similarly, if more than one member of the working party is based close to each other, you may agree to meet up and dial in together, but there will be no requirement for volunteers to meet in one place.

A new working party is being established to develop a research project on the role of energy in the economy.  This is an opportunity to steer actuarial thought on the subject.

As a member of this working party we’d like you to consider the following question:

“What should actuaries know about the role of energy in the economy and what are the implications for their work?”

The motivation for the project is that no economic activity (or, indeed, activity of any kind) can take place without energy.  However, economic models rarely include energy and may be inconsistent with the fundamental laws of thermodynamics.  This makes it hard to consider the implications of energy constraints and the low carbon energy transition for our work.

Your main role as a member of the working party will be to:

  • identify the key research questions
  • assess the feasibility of the IFoA addressing these questions through research
  • if appropriate, prepare a research funding request for consideration by the IFoA's Research and Thought Leadership Board.

We’d also like the working party to write a short blog or article to share what they have learnt about the subject with the wider actuarial
profession.

We are seeking three to eight members and non-members with an interest in economics, energy and wider resource and environment issues from across the spectrum of actuarial work to join this working party.  If you’re interested in joining and have relevant experience (e.g. commissioning research projects from academic/research institutions or chairing an IFoA working party), please consider volunteering to take on the role of Chair. 

If the request for funding is successful, volunteers will be invited to form a ‘task and finish group’ to work with IFoA research staff to select an appropriate third party to carry out the work on the IFoA’s behalf and oversee the project as it develops.  We hope that most members of the working party would continue to be involved in this second phase of work. 

Time commitment

It is envisaged that volunteers will be appointed in the Summer and the working party will run for a maximum of six months.  Volunteers are asked to participate in meetings every three to six weeks (lasting around one hour) plus allow two to three hours for preparation and post-meeting work for each meeting.

Meetings will be held by conference call to allow us to widen this opportunity to all members but if you live or work near to one of the IFoA offices, you are welcome to make use of our facilities for the call.  Similarly, if more than one member of the working party is based close to each other, you may agree to meet up and dial in together, but there will be no requirement for volunteers to meet in one place.

The Health and Care Research Sub-committee launched a member-led working party in 2018 to research mortality and morbidity of diabetes to understand how risk factors and good management of this conditions can impact outcomes.  The working party now requires up to three additional members, based in Asia, who are either actuaries or lay members with extensive expertise in the area of diabetes with modelling and analytical skills working with large data sets, or with direct experience of working with life or health insurance products covering Diabetes in Asia.

The Lifelong Learning (Life Practice) Sub-committee is seeking to recruit up to two members to join them, who should be a Fellow or Associate member of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA).

The Life Board and Life Research Sub-committee are seeking up to ten volunteers to join a working party to investigate long terms guarantees on pensions, savings, protection and annuity products.  The two key questions to be answered are:

  • Do long term insurance guarantees have a future in the UK? 
  • What could be done to make them more affordable and attractive?

Additional areas to research include:

  • Can these products be simplified to ensure that the customer understands the features/risks?
  • Is there consumer confidence/a market for these products following Equitable Life and mis-selling of endowment mortgages?
  • How viable are these products in a low interest environment?
  • What new products and features could be developed to meet any need?
  • Are there any limitations imposed by current capital requirements that would require to be overcome?

Ideally, volunteers should have a strong interest and/or background in products offering long term guarantees.  This could include those with expertise in protection, longevity, risk, capital management and investments, pension products or with-profits products.

Time commitment

The intention is that the working party would run for 12 months.  The volunteers on this working party will be asked to participate in one meeting a month.  Meetings typically last around 60 minutes and will be by video conference/conference call to allow us to widen this opportunity to all members.  It is hoped that volunteers will also undertake a few hours for follow up actions between meetings which may include undertaking research and drafting articles.

Up to two volunteers are sought to join the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) Life Office Taxation Working Party in the role of member.

Working party objective/aims:

  • identify and advise on new developments in the field of taxation of life assurance companies and the policies that life assurance companies issue
  • support the working party in their consideration of implications for members of the actuarial profession in their work within the life assurance field
  • support the working party in any drafting of responses to HMT or HMRC consultations
  • support the working party in any communications with members of the IFoA either through presentations, articles for publication, etc.

Area of expertise

The working party is looking for a member of the IFoA who has an interest and/or experience in the area of tax for life assurance companies.  This includes how the tax rules in the UK impact on the design and management of life assurance products.  Experience in relation to the taxation of insurance policies, VAT and other aspects of tax that affect life assurance companies and their products would also be helpful.

Time commitment

Participation in this working party will be by conference call to allow us to widen this opportunity to all members.  Meetings are generally held monthly by conference call.  The duration of the meeting varies according to the agenda but will normally not exceed one hour.

There is also likely to be a need to support drafting of communications from time to time.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) Finance & Investment Research Sub-committee are seeking expressions of interest to join this new working party.  Lay members (i.e. non IFoA members) are also welcome.

Background 

Most defined benefit pension schemes are closed to accrual and new entrants.  Liability profiles are maturing and schemes are becoming more cash flow negative.  The risk and return dynamics of an investment strategy changes as cash flow needs increases.  A cash flow driven investment strategy can be defined as the optimal investment strategy for a scheme, taking into account the need to pay benefits, generate investment returns and control risk.

Working party objectives:

  • to be a source of knowledge and expertise within the IFoA on CDI investment strategies for DB pension funds 
  • to publish at least one paper/presentation which sets out the key characteristic of CDI investment strategies and their construction  
  • review CDI approaches and asset classes used to build these investment strategies 
  • will consider how the cash flow objective can be defined (e.g. using benchmark credit indices or projected cash flow values); the impact of sponsor covenant; the impact of pension funds wanting to have an investment strategy which is compatible with an insurance end game objective and how this would affect the illiquidity appetite and how CDI investment strategies fit into the risk management framework.

The findings and results will be presented to the wider actuarial community via presentations at IFoA events, industry conference and articles in the Actuary Magazine. 

Time commitment

Volunteers will be asked to participate in approximately six to eight meetings per year which will be by conference call to allow us to widen this opportunity to all members.  These will be held every four to six weeks and last between 60-90 minutes.  It is anticipated that volunteers will be expected to undertake research and follow up actions between meetings.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ (IFoA’s) Finance and Investment Research Sub-committee is seeking expressions of interest from members interested in joining this new working party.  Lay members (i.e. non IFoA members) are also welcome to join.

Background 

Prior to pension freedoms virtually all retirees, with a defined contribution (DC) pension, used their savings to buy annuities to provide themselves with a retirement income.  Only a small number of wealthy (often financially sophisticated) retirees used income drawdown.  There were rules governing the amount of income that could be taken, a requirement for regular reviews, and access to advisers.  Capped drawdown, as it is now known, ceased for new retirees after April 2015.  Drawdown has now become the most popular option for accessing pension savings with nearly three times as many new drawdown accounts being set up than annuities purchased since October 2015.

A consequence of the sudden way in which pension freedoms were announced in the 2014 Budget and introduced in 2015 is that a supporting regulatory environment was not in place and remains, for the most part, inadequate for the challenges consumers now face when making potentially life changing financial decisions.

Objectives

This working party is being established to act as a source of knowledge and expertise within the IFoA on drawdown.  It will:

  • initiate proposals and respond to consultations on regulatory change
  • review existing strategies for managing drawdown for income and the tools currently available
  • recommend best practices for: 
    • managing income drawdown 
    • considering the option and timing of annuity purchase
    • consumer communications 
  • publish papers/presentations covering current practice and working party’s recommendations.  It is hoped that the first paper or presentation will be released by the end of October 2019
  • present findings and results at IFoA and industry conferences.

We are seeking to hear from members who would like to express an interest in taking on this volunteer role.  This is a great opportunity to become involved in managing the current Pensions Education, CPD and Conference programme as well as shaping the future provision of Pensions CPD provided by the IFoA.  As part of our succession planning, it is hoped that the Deputy Chair will use the time in post to shadow the Chair and prepare to take over the role of Chair, in due course.

  • creating and developing an excellent and varied pensions CPD events programme

  • identifying topics and potential speakers for specific events
  • listening to members’ feedback.

Skills and experience 

If you are a member of the IFoA, and have an enthusiasm for lifelong learning and planning CPD events, we would like to hear from you.  We are ideally looking for volunteers who have:

  • an awareness of current issues in pensions
  • an ability to come up with ideas and to identify hot topics
  • a willingness to pro-actively help organise and chair one event per year (this includes making contact with the potential speakers and securing their support)
  • a desire to develop CPD online and explore new delivery methods would also be an advantage but is not essential
  • experience of organising training events is also desirable but not essential.

 In order to broaden the expertise on the sub-committee, we are particularly interested in hearing from individuals who currently work within the public sector.

Time commitment

The time commitment would be one hour meetings every quarter, from September through to July, plus approximately another hour per month (more when managing a specific event) for follow up emails/calls etc.  Meetings will be by conference call to allow us to widen this opportunity to all members, and do not require members to attend in person.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries is seeking proactive and experienced volunteers to join the General Insurance (GI) Education Team. This is your opportunity to help the profession by developing syllabus materials for the next generation of actuaries.

The GI Education Team will support the GI Module Lead in reviewing and developing the GI syllabus, core reading and assessment material. They will ensure the module is kept current, relevant and innovative in its thinking. Team members will be asked to carry out their responsibilities in a proper and impartial manner, in accordance with IFoA governance.

We are looking for volunteers with experience of all areas of general insurance including pricing, reserving and capital modelling.

Time Commitment
The expected time commitment is 20-30 hours per year.

The IFoA syllabus is updated annually and signed off by the Education Committee (which reports to the Lifelong Learning Board) in January for the following year with the module content prepared for publishing in June each year. Assessment materials are all signed off by the end of February for that year. Volunteers will be required to attend regular module review meetings (attendance can be via phone or video conference) and undertake actions, including reviewing and writing relevant material.

IFRS 17 Standard for Insurance Contracts is expected to be effective from 1 January 2022.  The new Standard will apply to all insurers that have IFRS reporting requirements and will mean potentially significant changes for all general insurers falling in this category.  The impact of IFRS 17 will be far reaching from data needs to modelling requirements, all the way through to financial reporting.

The current Chair, Helen Cooper, is retiring from the working party and so a new Chair is sought to lead the working party and drive through its initiatives. 

Time commitment   

The volunteer Chair will be asked to commit six to seven hours per month.  This time will include participating in/chairing a monthly meeting of the working party, which will be by conference call to allow us to widen this opportunity to all members.  Conference calls will be arranged at a mutually convenient time for all involved.  If you live or work near to one of the IFoA offices, you are welcome to make use of our facilities for the call.  Similarly, if more than one member of the working party is based close to each other, you may agree to meet up and dial in together, but there will be no requirement for volunteers to meet in one place.

In addition to the above, the working party Chair will also drive forward activities between meetings and participate in the General Insurance Oversight Committee (GIROC) meetings on a bi-monthly basis (this can be by conference call), to share progress and discuss opportunities for collaboration with other working parties.  The working party also coordinate activities with other IFRS 17 working parties within the IFoA (e.g. those with a Life Insurance focus) and with other international actuarial associations to share developments.

A new international working party is being established, chaired by Sarah MacDonnell, to bring together experts from around the globe in the field of machine learning in reserving.

Our starting premise is that whilst machine learning techniques are widespread in pricing, they are not being adopted ‘on the ground’ in reserving (certainly in the UK).  The idea of this working party is to help move this forward, by identifying what the barriers are, communicating any benefits, and helping develop the research techniques in pragmatic ways.

At the same time we understand the resource and time pressures that reserving actuaries are under and the aim is not to replace existing reserving methods per se, but to start the journey to understanding if and how machine learning may help us in our day to day work.

Scope

     1.  Find out where the market is on progressing this:

  • what are the barriers?
  • what are the benefits?

     2.  Bring together papers/work done to date

     3.  Undertake research:

  • identify any literature gaps, e.g. areas as yet unstudied
  • carry out research to fill the gap
  • this is likely to include an element of education in data science techniques using examples.

     4.  Look at specific questions around techniques, e.g.:

  • what techniques should be looked at/which work best and why?
  • how to incorporate actuarial judgement into process
  • how to measure/spot trends
  • can uncertainty be measured?
  • IBNER mostly modelled for these purposes– what to do about IBNYR?
  • paid is often more reliable than incurred – can the information in case estimates be utilised?
  • use of operational time/claims process.

IFRS 17 Standard for Insurance Contracts is expected to be effective from 1 January 2022.  The new Standard will apply to all insurers that have IFRS reporting requirements and will mean potentially significant changes for all general insurers falling in this category.  The impact of IFRS 17 will be far reaching from data needs to modelling requirements, all the way through to financial reporting.

The IFRS 17 Working Party is currently seeking to appoint an additional member to join them to fulfil the volunteer role of minute taker for the group.  The successful candidate will participate in the monthly working party meetings, minute the discussions and actions and circulate these round the group.  They will also be asked to summarise key discussions at meetings and events in order to produce draft form outputs to be used for blogs, articles and make preliminary notes for final report outputs.

This role is ideally suited to a member of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) (qualified or student member) who has a general insurance background.  This is an excellent opportunity to work closely with the Chair and to support this working party.  It also offers the opportunity to gain experience of being involved in a working party, to network with the existing members, and to increase your knowledge and experience in this area.  It is therefore a great opportunity for those new to working parties or new to IFRS17.

Time commitment   

This volunteer will typically be expected to commit two to four hours per month.  This includes participation at a monthly meeting, and follow up actions.  The monthly meetings will be by conference call to allow us to widen this opportunity to all members.  Conference calls will be arranged at a mutually convenient time for all involved.

Objectives:

  • work in conjunction with the Periodical Payment Orders (PPO) Working Party to ensure that key messages of interest to the industry, consumers, the press or government bodies are appropriately aired
  • collect additional data from within the UK market or from other sources as the working party sees fit
  • maintain appropriate standards with respect to competition law – in particular no individual company actuary will see any data other than aggregate market data and there will be no discussion around pricing related matters
  • all data processing is being hosted and anonymized by Willis Towers Watson.

The working party aims to include a representative from each organisation that handles UK based General Insurance (GI) third party data.  While this is an individual volunteer appointment, the individual volunteers appointed to this working party are appointed to represent their organisation. 

Time commitment and participation

Approximately one day per month made up of attendance at a monthly meeting by conference call lasting approximately one and a half hours and follow up research and actions between meetings.

Periodical Payment Orders (PPOs) are a significant feature of insurers' and reinsurers' balance sheets already and are having an impact on pricing and capital modelling efforts of GI actuaries.  The PPO Working Party exists as a source of knowledge and expertise within the IFoA and has been at the forefront of advising GI actuaries about the impacts of PPOs on their work, such as the need to use life insurance techniques in their valuation. 

The PPO Working Party is currently seeking one proactive volunteer to lead the investment work stream.  This role is suited to both members and non-members who have a background in the investment area either from a general insurance, pensions or investment bank perspective. The successful candidate would be expected to drive a work stream and maintain the momentum of a working group comprising members from a variety of international locations. 

The investment work stream would be expected to produce a written report of the findings of their work and present at industry events as appropriate.

Time commitment

Volunteers will typically be expected to commit six to seven hours per month.  This includes participation at a monthly meeting which will be by conference call to allow us to widen this opportunity to all members.  Conference calls will be arranged at a mutually convenient time for all involved.  If you live or work near to one of the IFoA offices, you are welcome to make use of our facilities for the call.

Independent Examiners are appointed by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) to assist in monitoring the quality and standards of university programmes with IFoA exemption agreements.

They play a vital role in ensuring that the exemption recommendation process runs smoothly and make a positive impact on maintaining and developing university programmes which have agreements with the IFoA.

This enables us to demonstrate to the Financial Reporting Council Conduct Committee as well as other stakeholders and customers, that the quality and standards of alternative routes to Qualification are equivalent to the Profession’s exams.

This is a senior role with a high level of responsibility and as such we take considerable care in the selection process.

We are seeking to hear from Fellows, Associates and Honorary Fellows who have:

  • experience in actuarial practice and/or are involved in teaching actuarial science programmes
  • relevant experience in setting and marking the IFoA’s exams, or equivalent university programme or professional qualification exams
  • a good working knowledge of the IFoA’s current exam syllabus and structure and awareness of the latest developments.

It is important to us to have the right balance of practitioners and academics each year and therefore we are keen to build up a good bank of support upon which we can draw.

Inspire the next generation to consider an actuarial career.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) is looking for members who want to promote an actuarial career to enthusiastic young people.

If you want the opportunity to get out into your community or to visit a university and help guide the next generation in a fulfilling and diverse career, as an actuary, then this is the volunteer vacancy for you.

A Career Ambassador is a rewarding opportunity, which can take you to all sorts of interesting places.  We are seeking volunteers to speak at schools, colleges and universities about an actuarial career.  The IFoA attends over 15 career fairs and talks annually and Career Ambassadors help represent the IFoA and the industry as a whole at these events.

How it works

Once confirmed, you will be added to a bank of names of Career Ambassadors.  You will then, as opportunities arise, be sent an email by the Careers Team.  These opportunities might be invitations to attend a careers fair, or to give an A-level student a call to explain to him or her what an actuary does.

We also hope you will pro-actively look for opportunities in your area.  When you identify an opportunity we ask you to let our Career team know, so we can provide you with up to date material to support your talk.

To volunteer to act as a Career Ambassador you should either be a qualified actuary or a student member in employment working towards your qualification.  You need to be confident enough to be able to talk about your route into the profession and your current role.  You should also be in a position to know a bit about the current exams, how the profession works and what we do.

As part of their remit to engage with members living and working in Scotland, the Scottish Board run an initiative called "Knowledge Sharing Scotland" which delivers technical and professional CPD training, to small (20-40) groups of actuaries in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling, throughout the year.

The purpose is to better engage with employers of actuaries; to bring these sessions to their offices, provide networking, offer CPD, and to deliver additional events and valuable knowledge to members living and working in Scotland.
 
These events are advertised on the events calendar.
 
The Scottish Board are seeking to hear from individuals who would be prepared to volunteer to support this resource either as:  

  • a speaker at a future event, and or 
  • to host a lunchtime event in their office

This is an opportunity to support the quality assurance of the IFoA’s research outputs.

Background

As a Learned Society, the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) has an active research agenda through volunteer working parties and commissioned research projects, primarily under the remit of the seven Practice Boards or the Research and Thought Leadership Committee (RTLC).  Research topics include all practice areas, as well as emerging themes for the actuarial profession. 

All IFoA research seeks to be open access, thus freely available to a variety of audiences worldwide.  Therefore, it is important that research outputs are of the highest quality.

Research outputs typically include sessional meeting papers, other published research papers, conference presentations and also journal articles.  Dissemination can be through sessional meetings, conferences and other events; journals and publications, including the British Actuarial Journal and Annals of Actuarial Science; the IFoA website and external channels.

This volunteer role

The IFoA is seeking to build up a pool of volunteers who have an interest in research and are in a position to review research outputs on an ad hoc basis.  The volunteers will form a virtual group know as the Research Peer Review Pool.

Background

City & Guilds have been successful in applying to the Skills Funding Agency for 17 standards, one of which is the Actuarial Level 4 Standard.
Apprenticeships benefit employers and individuals, and by boosting the skills of the workforce they help to improve economic productivity. Apprenticeship reforms will support an increase in the quality of apprenticeships so that more individuals have the chance to pursue a successful career – whether this is their first step on the employment ladder or progression within a current employer or sector.

The role of the Assessor

Successful candidates will become an Independent End-point Assessor for City & Guilds Independent End Point Assessment Service, in the Investment Industry area.

As an Independent End-point Assessor, you will be the key person in the decision making process of apprenticeship outcomes.  The primary focus of this role is to liaise with the relevant organisations / employers; planning and carrying out assessment activities; and ensuring consistency of grading decisions.  You will also have the opportunity to share and interpret your decisions as part of standardisation meetings which will be run by a Lead Independent Assessor for internal training and moderation purposes.  Having gained expertise and credibility through your work in the industry, you will have the chance to be part of a team looking to develop the Investment Industry professionals of the future.

Providing financial education through the Livery Schools Link, the London-based Worshipful Company of Actuaries has teamed up with Teaching Business Enterprise and Employability in Schools (BEE) to provide financial education to young people. We are currently running schemes in two primary schools - one in Tower Hamlets in London, and one in Dorking in Surrey - and we are likely to be setting one up in Hertfordshire in 2019.

Each scheme comprises six sessions across the Summer and Autumn terms. Four of the sessions are conducted in the classroom at the school and one at the Bank of England. The final session is a Dragon’s Den style event hosted at local offices. Each session lasts up to 2 hours. Ideally volunteers would be able to attend more than one of these sessions to help to provide some continuity for the children. The schools may require DBS checks for volunteers.
 
If you are a member of the IFoA and live and/or work in, or near, London, Dorking or Hertfordshire, please consider volunteering to share your enthusiasm and your knowledge of finance with young people in our schools.

This is an excellent opportunity for Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) members with experience in our exams to get involved in providing support to our student members, around the globe. 

In 2016 Actuaries Without Borders (AWB®) launched a global mentorship program, covering remote exam tutoring for professional actuarial exams, and providing the following benefits to the global society:

  1. assistance in the development of the actuarial profession where there is a lack of such resources
  2. contributes to the awareness of the actuarial profession and the spread of the actuarial education, by encouraging qualified actuaries and academics across the world to volunteer in global mentoring, including actuarial exam tutoring, through a convenient platform available around the clock.

This program is not intended to provide free consulting service nor non-actuarial coaching.  It is restricted to non-commercial use.

The program has expanded rapidly following its launch, and to meet the demand of different mentees AWB are currently looking for individuals to volunteer to become mentors and also for someone to take on the role of deputy project manager.

At the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) we pride ourselves on working collaboratively with organisations that employ our student members.  It is vital that we get your feedback and work with you to support your (and our) students, so make sure you have a volunteer Student Employer Contact (SEC) registered with us.

How does this benefit you?  Having an SEC:

  • gives you direct communication with our Engagement and Learning Directorate
  • will ensure you are one of the first to receive important information and updates about any changes which may effect your students
  • allows your organisations’ voice to be heard and for your organisation to have your say about a hot topic (such as the Education Strategy Review)
  • provides you with support to ensure students in your organisation are supported.

An SEC does not need to be a qualified actuary but they do need to be someone who is willing to play a proactive role in two-way communication between the IFoA and the employer.

As this role involves supporting students, it is not possible for a current student to become an SEC.

If your organisation employs IFoA student members we encourage you to appoint an SEC.  If you would like to volunteer to take on this role, or to check if someone in your organisation has already volunteered, please contact Debbie Atkins, Head of Engagement.  Debbie will put you in contact with Kirstie Smith, Senior Stakeholder Relationship Manager at the IFoA.  Kirstie supports all SECs.  When contacting Debbie it would be helpful if you could please provide a note of the following:

  • your organisation’s name and location(s)
  • an approximate number of IFoA student members currently in your organisation 
  • a note of your ARN, if you are a member of the IFoA
  • if you are not a member of the IFoA, please provide your full contact details plus a note of your role within your organisation.
