Fellows and Associates were recently notified of their opportunity to vote in the Honorary Fellow Elections for 2016. Honorary Fellows are a valued section of our membership and bring a wealth of expertise to the IFoA.  The IFoA encourages members to exercise their vote in recognising the contribution of the following outstanding individuals who are being proposed to be invited to join the IFoA as Honorary Fellows.

The nominees this year are:

  • Dr Madhavi Bajekal: At UCL, Maddy leads a research team investigating the drivers of recent improvements in longevity at older ages and, particularly, how these vary by socioeconomic circumstances.  Maddy has been a longstanding and active member of the IFoA’s Mortality Research Steering Committee, through which she has been instrumental in a number of IFoA events.
  • Professor David Bell: As Professor of Economics at the University of Stirling, David has provides policy advice to the UK, Scottish and Irish Governments and is regularly consulted by the media for expert views in relation to youth unemployment, constitutional change, education policy and long-term care.  He has been a regular speaker at IFoA events and his research interests overlap with the IFoA’s policy priorities.
  • Norma Cohen: Former Demography Correspondent with the Financial Times, Norma has reported extensively on issues relating to population change and its effects on economies and retirement systems, aggregate demand, asset values and consumption patterns.  As well as reporting on the work of the IFoA, notably through an interview with an IFoA President, she has also had interaction with the IFoA through member events.
  • Robin de Wilde QC: Robin is currently Chair of the Ogden Working Party, a position he has held for a number of years and has brought him into close contact with actuaries and the work of actuaries.  Through his own legal career, he specialises in the field of Professional Negligence, particularly Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence. 
  • Gábor Hanak: Gábor is former Chairman of the Groupe Consultatif Actuariel Européen  (now Actuarial Association of Europe (AAE)) and a past president of the Hungarian Actuarial Society.  He has been instrumental in the development of the actuarial profession in Hungary.  Through his continued and active involvement in the AAE, he continues to have regular interactions with the IFoA.
  • Sir David Spiegelhalter: David is currently Winton Professor for the Public Understanding of Risk, and Professor of Biostatistics, at the University of Cambridge.  His background is in medical statistics, particularly the use of Bayesian methods in clinical trials, health technology assessment and drug safety. We are delighted to welcome David as this year’s IFoA Spring Lecture speaker.
  • Dr Yulong Zhao: With many years of experience working at the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC), Yulong has played a key role in leading in China’s recent insurance regulation reformation, specifically through the development of China’s Risk Oriented Solvency System (C-ROSS).

Council strongly recommends a vote in favour of all of these nominees and further information can be found on the IFoA’s website.  The election is being administered by the Electoral Reform Services (ERS).   Fellows and Associates will have received an e-mail directly from the ERS with their access code for voting.  The vote closes at noon on Monday 18th April.
