Can incentive really change physical activity
RAND recently published the largest study of its kind on the design of incentives to increase physical activity using verifiable data. The results indicated that incentives can lead to increased and sustained activity, with a more pronounced behaviour change in more unhealthy individuals.
In this presentation we will review the aims and results of the study, and discuss the impact of the design of programs aimed at reducing healthcare and mortality costs over time. This has significant implications for health and life insurers and this will be further elaborated in the context of Discovery’s Joint-Venture with Ping An Health Insurance

-
The speaker will explore the competing views of change impacting the insurance and insurance industry today – and its significance to actuaries. How can actuaries thrive in the years and decades ahead, as we are beset by technological and business model disruption, climate change, 100-year lives, globalization and its consequences? A curious and adaptable mindset, a multi-disciplinary approach and the embracing of technology as partners, are proposed for actuaries to enable them to navigate the new paradigms. The speaker will introduce the concept of the dated actuarial “safe and secure box”, and how it would be undermined by data science, machine learning and new business models. Finally, the speaker argued that we can transform our “safe and secure box” to a “springboard for the future” and circumvent and survive the rising sea levels in the world of the Moravec Paradox.
Speaker: Tan Suee Chieh – incoming IFoA President-elect
