I’ve always been fascinated with unexpected outcomes and structures that become unintentionally ironic. From five cats introduced to Marion Island to control mice (becoming a huge threat to the bird population) to Orwell’s Ministry of Truth, the counter-intuitive and simply perverse holds a slight fascination.

Solvency II’s insistence that we consider ‘all risks, actual or potential, that are or may affect a firm’ can be a bit daunting.
For ORSA purposes, I tend to fall back on the fact that we always test lower sales, higher claims and greater expenses, which are the obvious outcomes from all manner of unthought-of risks.

A range of topics are being covered at present, however the working party has identified the following areas where it lacks the experience to take a workstream forward or lacks representation and would specifically like to recruit members to fulfil these elements:
Accommodating career breaks

Chika Aghadiuno, chair of the IFoA’s Diversity Advisory Group, on issues around career breaks raised at a recent IFoA event.
A career break comes in many different guises and can mean different things to different people.
It can be perceived as code for an enforced period out of work; an opportunity to explore a change of career; and, of course, a time to focus on family – including maternity and paternity leave.
From here to CDC?

When the IFoA asked me to write a blog about CDC, my first reaction was to wonder whether I can find an angle not already covered elsewhere by Henry Tapper! My only hope was to write my own story of how I got involved with CDC, and thoughts on where it might be heading. So, here goes….

Volunteer for the Committee for Lifelong Learning in Risk Management

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) is seeking to appoint proactive volunteers to join the Committee for Lifelong Learning in Risk Management.
This committee plays an important and highly active role in shaping the content provided in the IFoA’s Risk Management CPD events and seeks to ensure the events include a good mix of professionalism, current issues, and hot topics. The committee also plays an important role in ensuring the education of Risk Management actuaries is kept as up to date and relevant as possible.
