AMS announces topics for future reviews

The IFoA Actuarial Monitoring Scheme is pleased to announce topics for future review that will form part of our Thematic Review Programme. Topics are chosen in areas identified as being of significant public interest, as well as having the potential to provide useful insights into the work of IFoA Members. The Actuarial Review Team will undertake reviews in the following areas:
CMI notes excess weekly deaths remain high but stable

During the coronavirus pandemic, the Continuous Mortality Investigation (CMI) is publishing frequent UK mortality analysis through its mortality monitor. The latest update covers week 49 of 2020 (28 November to 4 December) based on provisional England & Wales deaths data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on 15 December 2020.

The next pandemic: where is it coming from and how do we stop it?

In this article, virus-hunters in jungle hot spots and labs give their views on the challenges and cause for optimism in identifying new viruses and preventing another major international pandemic. It explores factors that make disease emergence more likely or change the pattern of disease, such as deforestation and the illegal trade in wild animals, anthropogenic climate change and extreme weather events such as drought and flooding.
Discussion Paper on Risks to Water Resources

A discussion paper, prepared by the Resource and Environment Working Group (REWG) of the International Actuarial Association (IAA), examines the natural and human risks to water resource systems. It illustrates these water resource risks by considering three representative systems: those in New York City, Mexico City and India. A generalised risk register is developed that identifies and classifies the risks that all such systems face. Each of the three representative systems is then assessed using the risk register as a starting point.

Solvency II: Call For Evidence - Survey for General Insurance Actuaries
7 December 2020
General Insurance actuaries are encouraged to complete the following survey, set up on behalf of the IFoA, as part of the response to HM Treasury on post-Brexit changes in Solvency II.
The IFoA aims to submit a response in January 2021 and survey results will be considered in this final write up. The UK Government is looking for opinions on changes in SCR, Risk Margin, Discount Rates, Reporting, Climate Change and Matching Adjustment.
